This isn't positive.

2012 marks my second year of Youmacon, and unfortunately didn't even come close to the goof time I had last year. Really, the only thing that sold it was being with friends (something I can do anywhere) and even that was severely restricted by being cooped up in the COBO for most of the weekend. The 10-20 min long walk building that the Art Ally and Dealers Room were in, and the place no one wanted to bother making the cold hike to, at least not more than once.
The building duel building set up with its distance really dispersed the con energy that usually makes these kind of events so enjoyable, and that along with how they utterly screwed over art ally vendors put a real damper on my weekend, and the negatives ended up outweighing the positives.

PROS:
Spending time with :iconthe-mirror-melts:, carleigh, ciara and jeff. Other friends such as :iconzacloudseth: :iconyoumee400: and :iconstillvisions: along with a handful of other people were hard to spend time with, again mostly because of where I was stuck 90% of the weekend with no easy way back to the main con. I didn't even get to really say more than Hi to friends who were fellow art sellers.

Video Game Room: Honestly the best thing Youma has going for it. The range of both console games to japanese and korean arcade games (all pre-paid) is fantastic, and I got to play DJMax for the first time, along with my favorite, Taiko Drum Master.

Dance: I really enjoy the raves at Youma, something I'm less than fond of at other cons whether it be the music or just the atmosphere. But the music for the most part is good, and the crowed generally respectful and fun, so I was really looking forward to this, and aside from it starting later than I think necessary, had a lot of fun.

Making new friends: I always like this :) Cons are one of those places where making friends is especially easy, since you already probably have a clear starting point of conversation. So Ryan, B-rock, and Matt: It was really great meeting you guys! Hurray for fellow Canadians!

CONS:
Art Ally everything: Seriously, this was a huge blunder on the cons part and, in my opinion, completely disrespectful to the artists who had worked hard on their pieces and paid money in good faith that Youmacon would place them somewhere that they could properly be displayed. We were stuck, with no indication of our location or hours anywhere, in the back of the Dealers Room at the Cobo center. Either had run out of money by the time they found us, or had missed us completely. I'm still in the middle of writing up a letter to the organizers because honestly? This is unacceptable, especially after gaining a reputation that the artists at Youma do well, as evidence in previous years. If they were going to put us in the Cobo, the least they could have done was set us up infront of the main dealers.

General organization: The one plus to being an artist this year? We didn't have to wait in that godawful pre-reg line that ate up most of peoples Friday. Again, unacceptable for a con that's been around this long. I understand there were technical errors, but there should be a failsafe for these kind of things, some sort of organized fall-back plan. Along with this, we didn't receive our con guides till Saturday, and the calenders were completely absent.

There's a lot more to be said, I feel, especially regarding the Cobo center and split feeling it left on the con, but I can't muster the energy to complain about it more than I already have. All in all, I probably won't be returning next year, unless there is some clear indication that it won't be a repeat of this past one. I almost definitely won't be returning as an artist, I can say that at least.

In other news, now that I have plenty of stock from my Youmacon prep, my site is now up for the jewelry I make and sell:
sugarfreejewelry.storenvy.com/

so please check it out!

<3,
Tamar
